Painted vs Galvanised Railings: Which Should You Choose?

When investing in new railings, gates, handrails or other steelwork, one of the most important decisions is how the steel will be protected from corrosion.

Many customers focus on the design, style and price of the railings, but the coating system often has a greater impact on the long-term value of the installation than the steel itself.

At Glenview Steel, we are often asked whether painted steel or galvanised steel is the better option. The answer depends on your budget, expectations and the environment where the steelwork will be installed.

Why Steel Needs Protecting

Steel is incredibly strong and durable, but when exposed to moisture and oxygen it will rust.

Once rust begins it can spread beneath coatings, weaken the appearance of the steelwork and increase maintenance costs.

A suitable protective coating dramatically increases the lifespan of the steel and reduces the amount of maintenance required throughout its life.

Painted Steel

Painted steel is the most traditional method of protecting fabricated steelwork.

The steel is cleaned, primed and coated with specialist metal paint to create a barrier between the steel and the environment.

Advantages of Painted Steel

  • Lower initial cost
  • Large choice of colours
  • Easy to touch up if damaged
  • Suitable for interior applications
  • Can be repainted in the future

Disadvantages of Painted Steel

  • Requires regular maintenance
  • Scratches can expose bare steel
  • Lifespan is heavily dependent on preparation and paint quality
  • May require repainting several times throughout its life

For budget-conscious projects or internal installations, painted steel can be an excellent solution.

Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel

Hot-dip galvanising protects steel by immersing the finished fabrication into molten zinc.

The zinc reacts with the steel to form a metallurgically bonded protective coating that shields the steel from corrosion. Unlike paint, the coating protects not only external surfaces but also the inside of hollow sections and difficult-to-reach areas.

Advantages of Hot-Dip Galvanising

  • Outstanding corrosion resistance
  • Extremely long service life
  • Very low maintenance requirements
  • Protects internal and external surfaces
  • Excellent value over the life of the product

Disadvantages of Hot-Dip Galvanising

  • Higher initial cost than paint
  • Industrial appearance
  • Limited colour options without additional coatings
  • Larger fabrications may be restricted by galvanising bath size

For outdoor railings, gates and handrails, hot-dip galvanising is often the most cost-effective solution over the life of the product.

What Is a Duplex Coating System?

A duplex coating system combines hot-dip galvanising with a decorative topcoat.

This approach provides the corrosion protection benefits of galvanising together with the appearance benefits of a coloured finish.

The galvanising protects the steel while the topcoat protects the galvanising, resulting in a system that can significantly outperform either coating used on its own.

Glenview Steel Colour Coat Option

For customers wanting maximum durability and a premium appearance, Glenview Steel offers a Colour Coat finish using the Colourgalv process provided by Highland Colour Coaters.

Colourgalv is a duplex coating system that combines hot-dip galvanising with a polyester powder-coated finish. The galvanised layer protects every surface of the steel while the powder coating adds colour, texture and additional protection. Highland Colour Coaters offer a wide range of colours and textures, including popular architectural colours such as black, anthracite grey and moss green.

Benefits of Colour Coat

  • Superior corrosion protection
  • Premium architectural appearance
  • Large range of colours and finishes
  • Excellent UV stability
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Long service life
  • Durable factory-controlled finish

For domestic railings, garden gates, balconies and commercial projects, this is often the highest-performing finish available.

Which Option Is Right For You?

Choose Painted Steel If:

  • Budget is the primary concern
  • The steelwork is installed indoors
  • You are prepared to carry out periodic maintenance
  • Long-term durability is not the highest priority

Choose Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel If:

  • You want the lowest lifetime ownership cost
  • The steelwork is exposed to the weather
  • You want minimal maintenance
  • Appearance is less important than durability

Choose Colour Coat (Duplex System) If:

  • You want the best combination of appearance and durability
  • The steelwork forms a visible feature of your property
  • You want a specific colour
  • You want to minimise future maintenance costs

Our Recommendation

For most outdoor railings, gates and handrails, galvanising provides the best long-term protection.

For customers who want both outstanding durability and a high-quality decorative finish, our Colour Coat duplex system offers the best overall solution.

Although the initial investment may be higher than a painted finish, the reduced maintenance requirements and longer service life often make it the most economical choice over the lifetime of the installation.

If you're unsure which coating is right for your project, contact Glenview Steel and we'll be happy to advise.
