Frequently Asked Questions

Why Are Some Railings More Expensive Than Others?

The visible steel often represents only a small proportion of the cost.

The price difference is usually caused by:

  • Material thickness
  • Fabrication time
  • Coating system
  • Installation complexity
  • Ground conditions
  • Design requirements

A galvanised railing may cost more initially but often costs less over its lifetime because it requires far less maintenance.

Solid Bar vs Hollow Section

Many customers assume heavier means stronger.

In reality, a properly designed hollow section can often provide equal or greater strength while reducing weight and installation costs.

Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel

Mild Steel

  • Lower cost
  • Can be galvanised or painted
  • Most common choice

Stainless Steel

  • Higher cost
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Modern appearance
  • Popular in coastal locations

Why Do Galvanised Railings Have Drainage Holes?

When hollow sections are galvanised, molten zinc must flow freely through the steel.

Vent and drain holes:

  • Improve coating quality
  • Prevent trapped air
  • Prevent dangerous pressure build-up

These holes are a sign of proper fabrication, not poor workmanship.

Why Do Welds Sometimes Look Different?

Some welds are:

  • Ground flush for appearance
  • Left visible for strength and economy
  • Designed to comply with structural requirements

The correct weld depends on the application.

Powder Coating vs Wet Painting

Powder Coating

  • Tough finish
  • Uniform appearance
  • Large colour range
  • Factory applied

Wet Paint

  • Easier to repair
  • Can be applied on site
  • Better for touch-ups and maintenance

Neither is automatically "better" - it depends on the project.

Why Does Galvanised Steel Sometimes Look Patchy?

Fresh galvanising can vary in colour and appearance.

This is normal and does not affect performance.

The protective zinc coating remains effective regardless of cosmetic variation.

How Long Should Railings Last?

Painted Steel

3-10 years before major maintenance.

Cold Galvanised Steel

5-15 years.

Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel

25-70+ years.

Duplex System

40-80+ years.
